    Default The Cooking Thread

Right-o, it's time for the cooking thread. The thread for recipes and tips and cuisine geekery.

I shall be specialised in cheap-as-chips, easy-as-rollerblading cooking, the type you can do in a 2 square metres kitchen... because that's all I can do.

Bearing in mind I'm useless at cooking and have managed to mess up everything from pancakes to plain veg, these "recipes" are clearly for everyone...

For lunch I am making the all new "Shrek Salad" :

    > You need : green beans, green pepper, and soya shoots.

Grab a big bowl, pour olive oil at the bottom, and salt and pepper and a little vinegar (not as much as in a usual vinaigrette). Then just add the green beans and the chopped-up pepper and the soya shoots, give it all a nice toss (yes) and you will be the proud maker of a mighty Shrek salad.

Bon appétit ! And please contribute....

Take one pack of Birdseye fish fingers, 1 lettuce, some mayonnaise and a tiger loaf from Asda.

Cook fish figers, cut tiger loaf in half. Insert fish fingers. Garnish with lettuce and dress with mayo. Enjoy. Dinner in 20 minutes.

That sounds rather nice actually! What does a tiger loaf look like?

It's just a normal crusty unsliced loaf, but quite a doughy one. Perfect for fish finger sandwiches. They are the ultimate quick and easy dinner. I can't get enough of them!

    Fish finger sandwiches are good.

I call this one the Pre Skate Pasta, I usually make it for lunch if I'm going on a mission later on. You can make it in 10 easy steps:

    1) Boil water
    2) Add Pasta
    3) While the pasta is cooking, finely chop up a small onion or a few shallots
    4) Fry up some chopped bacon or pancetta, add the onion and fry until browned
    5) Drain the pasta when it is cooked.
    6) Quickly crack an egg into the pasta, add the bacon and onions, maybe a bit of pepper and stir it all up.
    7) If you have done steps 5 and 6 quick enough, the egg will cook on the hot pasta and make a nice creamy eggy sauce. Pretty nice!
    Eat
    9) Put plate in dishwasher
    10) Go for a skate

I generally have 3 or 4 times more pop and I find the consistency of my flip tricks increases tenfold when I eat this simple dish.

But yes I might try that this week, sounds nice. I may dip the egg in boiling water for 1 min before though. Shame you can't get bloody bacon in France, will have to get some sort of ham.

If you leave a tiny bit of the hot water in with the pasta when you drain it the egg will cook fine. You can always put it in the microwave for a few seconds if it isnt completely cooked...

Oven cooked curried chicken thighs, with tomato, courgettes, onions, peppers. Serve with a touch of boiled basmati rice on the side.

I've got obsessed with marinara sauce with pasta.

    1) 3-6 cloves of garlic, chopped roughly.
    2) Lots of olives oil in a pan, medium heat.
    3) Fry garlic gently until light brown. Add some some salt and lots of black pepper.
    4) Can of chopped tomatoes, the more expensive the better.
    5) Add some fresh or dry basil, oregano, sugar to bring out tomato flavour.
    6) Simmer until thick.
    7) Eat.

This is sooo fucking good if you make some fresh meatballs, fry lightly and chuck them in as its simmering. Also, you can exchange the salt for anchovies instead, nom nom nom.
