Yeah you can download screen grabbers which record a certain part of the screen.

    Have you got the DVD?

You can rip the bits you want using handbrake, it outputs to mp4 or avi, which will work with pcf/premiere/wmm.

    www.handbrake.fr

If you're getting it off youtube or something, use www.keepvid.com it'll give you a downloadable mp4 to work with.

How can I extract a bit from a .avi clip if I want to put it in something I'll edit in iMovie?

you need a video converter that has the option to convert a selected part of a clip. sorenson squeeze does it

edit - or just just cut it up in imovie itself? what do you want to do exactly?

Did that a minute ago but the 15 seconds clip I extracted and saved in the edit makes the whole file MUCH heavier, something ridiculous.
Seems like 3 gigs have disappeared from the memory available in my comp...

Sorry for the language, I don't know shit about editing.

put the original clip in a timeline in imovie. cut it down to just what you want. export that as an avi. delete the original one from the project and import the shorter clip

Yeah I did that but it still seems heavy. Oh well, nothing too bad.
    Cheers Liam.

no worries. converting it to mov may help, but if your computer struggles with one 15 second avi clip then im not sure anything will be too helpful

Adobe Premiere saves preview files (which can be deleted after you export) somewhere in Documents->Adobe-> Prem Pro ->Preview files, perhaps iMovie does the same?
Apple seem to love saving shit on your hard drive without telling you about it.

I'm sure I remember MS Word having popups which said something along the lines of 'you haven't saved your document for 10 minutes - would you like to save now?'

Does this still exist? If so, how can I implement it?

    Thanks

Which version of Office are you using?

If it's 2007, check under the Word Options menu in the Office menu.

Rather than making a new thread, is anyone else on here getting socket failures when browsing the forum?

I keep getting these, not sure whether it's just becuase of the proxy at work though:

    ERROR
The requested URL could not be retrieved

While trying to retrieve the URL: http://forums.sidewalkmag.com/forumdisplay.php?

    The following error was encountered:

    * Socket Failure

    The system returned:

    (9 Address already in use

Squid is unable to create a TCP socket, presumably due to excessive load. Please retry your request.
