What does windows see the drive as? physically.

Sounds like eiither the wrong usb settings or a monged up registry entry for file association , if it's avi that are causing full cpu usage it will try to shut things down, if you can open task manager and try and do what you do when it crashes and it boings upto 100% when you click on the thumbnail i can find a fix for that.pretty easy.

EDIT* didn't read what i thought.

try turning the folder view to a different type.. like details instead of icons etc? one that renders in a different way.

Why would that shut his program down though? unless it was tens of thousands.

cause it might be the shells handler associated with the folder view...

it does. i think the problem is the underlying codec used to render the video frame on the icon. which is why i suggested changing the view type for the folder view.

unregging those two dll's does something with that which stops it crashing. dont get why theres now no thumbnail image after doing it.. unless they have to be reregistered in a certain order.

    So, regedit in run, find:

    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\SystemFileAssociations\.avi\shel lex\PropertyHandler

    Delete the value

Only thing you won't see anymore is the bitrate

Eurgh i feel all dirty with all this windowsness
