Thread: Barcelona - Live, Skate & Drink?

Default Barcelona - Live, Skate & Drink?

    Hey people!

I'm thinking of maybe going to Barcelona some time soon and possibly even to live for a bit.
Does anyone have any good experiences of going there as a Brit - or not - and hanging out / skating?

    Cheers,
    Gray

I heard it was shit. No spots, bad food and bad attitudes.

If I were you, I'd look elsewhere. Sorry.

    On a more serious tip.

Just be aware that the Spanish economy is pretty fucked at the moment with very high levels of youth employment so you may struggle to get work whilst you're out there.
On the plus side - life in general is pretty cheap in BCN and obviously it is an amazing place to be a skateboarder.

    Beware the party-trap though.

Great for skating, the architecture is nice and the paving is so smooth and there are hundreds of top spots. It's not so great if you have no money and can't find work (but that applies everywhere). It will help your job prospects if you can speak Spanish and Catalan (if you really want to acclimatise). Given that there's such a high unemployment rate it's probably better as a place to visit or study in but if you can get work go for it.

if I was in my 20s (as I assume you are) I'd be there in a second - there seems to be work in the call centre game (grim but its better than a call centre in Northern ireland) and a great lifestyle, climate, skateboarding, beaches, bitches....fuck me, I wasted my youth living through too many long winters in various UK and Irish cities !

as said earlier - beware the party trap

Yeah Nice1 anonymity, I am aware of the current climate and thanks for saying. With regards to the party-trap surely it can't be any worse than London, or are you just speaking in general? Cheers, G

Cheers dordsman for that info. I had a brief look and El Ravel seems to be a good place to stay, anyone? Thanks, G

Yeah this is true re London but it's a lot cheaper and easier to lose your mind in BCN if you're naive - which I'm sure you're not mate.
Just seen a fair few people lose their shit in Barca before so thought it was worth saying.
    Best of luck!

I'd second the party-trap point, particularly, as Anon points out, because it's cheap; but I think you just end up being a bit bored of it after a couple years and maybe moving back to the UK or elsewhere and settling a bit... Definitely worth doing it and seeing how it goes, call centres do seem to be the main employers for young Brits from what I know. If you know any other (popular) languages then I think it'll be very easy to find a job, if it's just English then it might be a bit harder but having had a quick Google search there are definitely opportunities. If you can learn a bit of Catalan and Spanish then you can try working in hospitality or bars too.

    +1 for Ravel.

Also agree with high-c about call centres. Or TEFL.
