Just listened to that and thought there were really good points raised, whether things will start to change for the better I don't know.

Fukuyama played himself for life with the End of History bit. Just looking at the text Anon posted I'm inclined to say that his new shtick will result in more of the same. I understand that big narrative projects are bound to have a few holes, but here they seem to be fundamental. His POV is US-centric, which is fine, but he's using it to explain the world, which doesn't work. I.e. what the Americans consider left is very much to the right of what Europeans consider left. On the other hand, identity politics aren't simply cultural, these groups are also very much concerned about the economic side of the argument.

I also don't buy into the bothsideism of his argument, or the old "if only there weren't so many foreign looking people in Europe, then there would be no cause for racism." He's calling for consensus, but you don't build consensus with the racists/far right.

I really don't want to spend too much time thinking about Fukuyama, and I have other things to do, so sorry about the brief post.

p.s. if anyone's interested in a more thoughtful argument about the divisions in US society, Rodgers's Age of Fracture is a really good read:
